Abstract

The study aimed to provide description of the management of KBIHU locating in South Sulawesi. It also providing description of the extent to which the KBIH followers understand the hajj rituals as well as the factors contributing to their understanding, and finding out appropriate strategies to improve understanding of the KBIHU participants in South Sulawesi.
The study was designed in qualitative phenomenology approach, using two techniques: observation and interview of both face-to-face and direct interview (correspondence via Whatsapp Application) to all supervisors or executive officers of KBIHU, all the teachers/mubaligh, public informal leaders, and government officials pertaining to the business of hajj. Questionnaires were also administered to the KBIHU clients as the instrument to collect data concerning the extent to which the clients understand the hajj rituals after attending the hajj training program as well as the factors contributing to their understanding. In addition, documentation and literature investigation techniques were also applied. All data collected were then analyzed qualitatively relying on pedagogy/andragogy, psychology and normative theology approaches.
The results of the study indicated that KBIHU in South Sulawesi in general experienced several interrelated problems. The KBIHU officials were generally by no means of unimpeded to travel along with their clients. Moreover, it is not always an easy way to gather intended clients due to the fact of limitation in quota, tough competitor, and low motivated people. Consequently, the KBJHU officials were not serious in managing the program which later caused some weaknesses especially in the aspect of planning. Finally, the results of the hajj trainings conducted by the KBIHU were not always satisfactory as indicated by the low level of clients’ understanding on the hajj rituals. Other factor were also noted contributing were the clients’ age, education, daily habits, low motivation, wrong perception on KBIHU, etcetera.  Based on SWOT analysis, there were identified several strategies need to be applied for the betterment of KBIHU program in the future. The first priority is the betterment of supervisors’ integrity, that is to run programs that are strengthening the capacity of the supervisors to cope with various problems they encounter. The next strategy is improving the quality of lesson plans including specifying achievable learning objectives, devising rational learning procedures, emphasizing more on skill building through particular teaching materials and method of presentation. The learning activities should be directed more to increase clients’ spiritual understanding, deepening awareness of the nature of hajj meaning rather than cognitive understanding. To facilitate the achievement of those programs, innovation in learning media must be done i.e. providing instructional videos and practical writings.
