Source International Journal of Social Sciences  pp 055-065    Vol 25. No. 1 -- 2014
Abstract

Jamu is an Indonesian traditional medicine used for treating sicknesses based on experiences handed down through generations. Jamu becomes marginal and loses its significant role in treatments due to the inclusion of the global medical drugs. Based on Foucault’s theory of discourse and his theory of power/ knowledge, this research would like to explain "how" rule operates where medical discourse began to strengthen and shift the position of the dominant jamu, the formation models and the forms of distribution in the society. Jamu is part of a health regime that is "excluded" because of the presence of new technologies, that is more modern, practical, scientific and tested. Nowadays, herbal appears as a "middle ground" between jamu and medicine, traditional and modern, natural and scientific, manual and technology, experience and knowledge. Through herbal, jamu is struggling to seize its position, become optimistic to be trusted again being a healthy treatment options.

Author

Ahmet ÖZKAN (MA) & Asst.Prof.Dr.A. Nejat TÖNGÜR

Source International Journal of Social Sciences  pp 066-072    Vol 25. No. 1 -- 2014
Abstract

This study has been conducted to reveal the reasons why ELT teachers use/do not use literature for reading comprehension activities. The study has been conducted with 140 preparatory class instructors working at foundation and state universities in Turkey. The data have been collected through a questionnaire, specifically designed for the study. The data were evaluated on Microsoft Excel 2010. The findings reveal that in general ELT teachers use literature in their reading classes; however, they consider restrictions of the curriculum, insufficient class time, and crowded classes as hindrances. Their perception of literary works to be linguistically difficult, demotivating, and their reliance on teachers to paraphrase, clarify, interpret, and explain appears as other significant reasons for using little or no literature for reading comprehension activities.

“OF EARLY SUN-SHINE”: MICHAEL MADHUSUDAN DUTT’S POETRY

Author

Md. Eftekhar Uddin

Source International Journal of Social Sciences  pp 103-112    Vol 25. No. 1 -- 2014
Abstract

This paper critically analyses the early poetic oeuvre of Michael Madhusudan Dutt in English and finds influences of various English poets in his work. Besides, Madhushudhan’s poems reflect his wide range of study in Christianity, in Hinduism and in classical literature. Though the poet borrows ideas, freak phrases, stray words and similes from many sources, foreign and indigenous, which show the depth of his erudition and range of his study, this paper argues, they do not make him an imitator. He takes ideas to build upon them and then veers away from his source to give his poem the stamp of originality. With his bold experiments in form, technique and theme which undeniably show his originality, Indo-Anglian poetry gets early sun-shine to come out of the cocoon of mimicry and come of age.
