CASTING THE AUTHORITY OR HOLDING IT STILL: AN INVESTIGATION OF TEACHERS’ ROLE IN CLT CLASSROOMS IN BANGLADESH

Author

Source International Journal of Social Sciences  pp 133-146   Vol 37. No. 1 -- 2015
Abstract

Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) appeared as a rescuer when language teaching in many parts of the world was waiting for a paradigm shift from the traditional language approaches and methods. 1960s can be marked as the inception of CLT. Since then it has gone through a number of different phases. Now CLT asks the teachers to assume the role of facilitator and monitor, rather than being a model of correct speech; which is very different from the traditional authoritative role of a teacher. Though CLT has been incorporated into the English language curriculum of Bangladesh for about a decade now, its success is still in question; and it seems that the apparent failure of CLT in Bangladesh might be the result of teachers’ traditional mind-set inside communicative classrooms. The purpose of the present study is to determine whether the role of CLT classroom teachers in Bangladesh context matches with that of an actual CLT classroom teacher. But the study will not be limited in investigating the teachers’ role only. It will also try to cast some light on teachers’ perceptions and attitudes towards CLT.
