KANT’S CONCEPT OF “UNIVERSAL HOSPITALITY”
AND NEO-GLOBAL CONFLICTS AGAINST
PERPETUAL PEACE

Author

Guncel Onkal

Source International Journal of Social Sciences  pp 026-032  Vol 012. No. 1 -- 2013
Abstract

The enlightenment project has not completed its prescribed mission entirely since it prefers keeping its close position to Western cultures and believes. However, the enlightenment’s original purpose was to cover all humanity. Although, the rejection  of non-Western identities has not been frankly claimed, exclusive  approach  to  “the  Other”  is  the  end  of  real  diversity.  We can still see its consequences in international organizations, namely EU, NATO and UN.
In this paper I aim to discuss this misunderstanding of hospitality and universal values regarding the possibility of perpetual peace idea in Kant on the socio-political period of “globalization” and “democratization”. The central framework is the idea that was noted in Kant’s Third Definitive Article for A Perpetual Peace: “Cosmopolitan  Right  shall  be  limited  to  conditions  of  universal  hospitality”. Nowadays, still, there are unfortunate wars at the various corners of the Globe. In these days, we always should remember Kant’s words which invite us to a kind of ideal peace and toleration hugging variety: “…the idea of national and international rights, necessary to the public rights of men in general. Only such amendment allows us to flatter ourselves with the thought that we are making continual progress towards perpetual peace.”
The idea of perpetual peace is necessarily underdetermined by critical concepts such as tolerance and humanity. The maxims of politics must agree with the rights of this world’s all citizens in behalf of humanity. In Kantian terms, possibility of cosmopolitism under the contemporary neo-Global conditions will be the main discussion in this article.

Abstract

This paper aims to present whether there is effect of the frequent flyer programs (FFPs) applied by the airways companies that want to build loyal customers over the loyalty of their customers. At the end of the study, it was observed that rewards given under the program were quite important to the members of the FFPs. Members consider the intangible rewards more important than the tangible benefits. On the other hand, customer loyalty levels of the members toward the airway companies are on the medium level.  Moreover, a medium level relationship (r=0.446) was observed between the customer loyalty and FFP. In addition, as a result of the regression analysis; it was found that FFPs have an influence over the customer loyalty and especially on the behavioral loyalty compared to the attitudinal loyalty.

Abstract

This article investigates technical efficiency of health production function and its determinants such as economic, social and environmental factors in Sub-Saharan Africa. For this purpose, a stochastic production frontier model, in which technical efficiency effects are assumed to be a function of some explanatory variables, is estimated using panel data over the period of 2000-2007. Investigation of the sources of technical inefficiency of health production function reveals that the economic and social factors are positively associated with efficiency; the environmental factor is negatively associated with efficiency. And also, technical efficiency periodically fluctuates during the period of investigation. Overall, the results suggest that government proactive approaches should be given to activities that go beyond the health system to influence the main determinants of health i.e. socioeconomic and environmental factors in preventing infectious diseases, improving life expectancy and aid populations to access available resources.

Source International Journal of Social Sciences  pp 055-075  Vol 012. No. 1 -- 2013
Abstract

Tax is a source of potential revenue for the state in supporting economic development. But it is not easy to impose taxes on the people because if too high then people will be reluctant to pay taxes. Conversely, if too low it will be short of funds so that construction will not run. Therefore, the taxpayer voluntary compliance is the key to success in tax collection. Based on attribution theory taxpayer behavior can be caused by internal factors, external factors or a combination of internal-external factors in compliance paying income tax. Research purposes to determine the impact of the implementation of administrative sanctions and understanding of tax laws on corporate taxpayer’s compliance. The method used was a survey method, kind of explanatory research. Sampling technique used is cluster sampling with a sample of corporate taxpayers as much as 30 respondents consisting of 11 state and 19 private enterprises. Instrument research using questionnaires. The analysis used is multiple linear regression. Hypothesis testing using the F test and t test. The results showed that there is a positive correlation between attitude taxpayer on the implementation of administrative sanctions and understanding of tax laws on taxpayer’s compliance. This suggests that compliance of corporate taxpayers may be caused by external factors, namely the implementation of administrative sanctions, and is caused by internal factors, namely an understanding of the taxpayer's income tax laws. Thus, the higher the administrative penalty imposed the tax payers will respond by increasing compliance in paying income tax as if the violation is detected then the penalty to be paid is much greater than the income that was not reported. The higher understanding of the corporate taxpayer’s income tax laws, then the taxpayer’s compliance will increase because taxpayers can fill out, calculate and report tax return correctly, complete and timely.
