Abstract

The present study attempts to examine the relationship between academic achievement and problem behavior of students of secondary schools. It also contributes facts and insights about the prevalence of problem behavior among students. A total 1208 respondents including students (grade IX), teachers and experts were engaged in collecting data through questionnaire, interviews and focus group discussion (FGDs). Students’ academic achievement was assessed using their cumulative grade point average (CGPA). Problem behavior was assessed from self report Bengali version of strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ). An explanatory sequential mixed method research design was applied where initial quantitative data collection and analysis was followed by a qualitative data collection and analysis. The findings show that as per the SDQ scale 22% of the total students either lie in the borderline or in the abnormal band. The prevalence of hyperactivity-inattention is the most and peer problem is the least among students. There remain gender differences in terms of problem behavior of students. Emotional problems are more prevalent among girls on the other hand the prevalence of hyperactivity-inattention is more among boys.  The correlation analysis indicates that academic achievement of students has considerable negative and significant relationship with all the attributes of problem behavior (Emotional symptoms, Conduct problems, Hyperactivity-inattention and Peer problems). Hyperactivity-Inattention has the most and conduct problem has the least association with academic achievement.

Source International Journal of Social Sciences  pp 011-020   Vol 08. No. 1 -- 2013
Abstract

This study intended to establish the applicability and effectiveness of conflict maps in promoting conceptual change. The study initiates with the identification of the alternative conceptions of secondary school students on the topic of gases. This was followed by the consequent remediation of these identified alternative conceptions using instructional materials developed from conflict maps. Conflict mapping was originally proposed by Tsai (2000) as an approach to enhance science instruction. Using three sections of grade 9 classes as research respondents; two-tiered testing, individual and group interviews, as well as class observations were conducted. Based on pre-testing, the identified prevalent alternative conceptions of the students include (a) the apparent inability of gas to occupy the volume of the container, (b) incompressibility of gases, (c) the increase in particle size of gases when heated, and (d) the settling of confined gas particles on the bottom of the container upon cooling. After classroom intervention using the instructional materials developed from conflict maps, analysis of results indicated positive learning gains in all three classes as indicated by the shift of the students’ conception by the majority of the population, from the prevalent alternative conception to the correct scientific conception.

FOREIGN OWNERSHIP, R&D AND KNOWLEDGE SPILLOVERS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: EVIDENCE FROM TURKEY

Author

Elif Kalaycı

Source International Journal of Social Sciences  pp 029-044   Vol 08. No. 1 -- 2013
Abstract

As an emerging market which deliberately pursued policies to attract as much FDI as possible since 2001, Turkey has not been examined from the R&D point of view except for a few studies. We use new enterprise-level data to study Turkey. Our results indicate that foreign ownership has a significantly negative effect on R&D activities. On the other hand, we find a strong geographical spillover effect from foreign to domestic firms. Regardless of the sector of a foreign firm, the presence of a foreign firm in the same province with a domestic firm produces strong technological spillover effects.

Source International Journal of Social Sciences  pp 045-053   Vol 08. No. 1 -- 2013
Abstract

This study aims to estimate willingness to pay (WTP) of people in the state of Kelantan, Malaysia for improvement in their domestic water services. Their water sector has been a long debate since their poor water services have threatened people’s daily routine such as water disruption, water leakage, smelly and dirty water supply. The water services should be managed effectively based on efficient water pricing since any improvement in services involve high cost in its operation. A Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) was employed to 552 households in the state for analysis regarding to the services and Probit model was used to analyse the data obtained through the survey. The results show that bid price, household income and household size have statistically significant impact on WTP and they are as expected in earlier studies.  The calculated mean WTP is RM0.60 applied on the first 35m3 and it is much higher from current water price. The new water price can be recommended for any improvement and upgraded services to high standard in services in the future which is satisfying consumer’s needs.

Abstract

Previous research suggests that gender differences exist in coping strategies of undergraduate students with significant effects on various affective and instrumental outcomes including self-esteem. For example, Lawrence (2006) reveals that there is a significant difference between males and females in terms of engagement in coping strategies and academic attainment. These results show that compared to females, males tend to detach themselves from the emotions of a situation and select different coping strategies. This study is an extension of the existing research as it investigates differences in coping strategies adopted by students in a collectivist society. The aim of this paper is to explore differences of the various coping strategies within gender in Kuwait.  We also compare our results to those previously reported in the United States, and individualist society............................................................................................................................

PERFORMING ENTERTAINMENT: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TWO LOCALITY PERFORMANCES FROM INDIA AND IRAN

Author

Afshin Amoozadeh Lichaei

Source International Journal of Social Sciences  pp 099-102   Vol 08. No. 1 -- 2013
Abstract

This doctoral thesis deals with two ritualistic folk art forms: the Iranian Tokamkhaani and the Indian Kirishnaytham. It should be obvious that the thesis tries to bring together two diverse forms of performances and two completely different forms of ritual traditions. where it was unclear whether it would continue to diffuse, stabilize as-is, or slowly deteriorate. The category of “religion” made me reject the historicity that surrounds the theoretical understanding of religions. I come to the conclusion that religions work in accordance with the specificities of the societies that it seeks to govern. These variations are also reflected in the regional variations of the performance of the rituals. We suggest that understanding the future success of the innovation would be facilitated to a large extent by a dialectical analysis of the involved contradictions. An introduction should, at first, try to justify such an eclectic choice. The answer lays on the one hand the personal choice of the researcher and on the other, the fascination for an art form that symbolizes and represents the most complex and colorful form of Indian per formative tradition.
