THE EMERGENT AFRICAN UNION: MATTERS ARISING

Author OSUNYIKANMI PIUS OLAKUNLE
Source International Journal of Social Sciences  pp 020-025 Vol 71. No. 1 -- 2019
Abstract

The paper attempts to examine the wisdom in setting up a supranational body like the African Union at this level of the continent’s development. The article relies heavily on the constitutive Act of the African Union plus the various papers delivered by eminent scholars at a National Seminar on the African Union at the ECOWAS Secretariat, Abuja from 14th – 15th May 2001. The writer had the privilege to be a participant at the seminar, and participated actively in the live discussions on the African Union. Generally, discussions at the seminar indicated that many people received the news of the African Union with serious reservations in view of the timing and level of preparedness of individual African countries. However, the consensus was that since the Union is already in existence efforts and resources should be mobilized towards sustaining it so that it can achieve its set objectives. The main recommendations here are that: appropriate institutions should be established as soon as possible to enable the union pursue its objectives with vigour; and the sustenance of the union requires a high degree of the political will and enthusiasm of African political leaders.
