TRENDS IN SELF-EMPLOYMENT IN MODERN TAIWAN AND DEMOGRAPHIC AND WORK CHARACTERISTICS OF SELF-EMPLOYED WORKERS

Author

Source International Journal of Social Sciences  pp 058-068 Vol 68. No. 1 -- 2017
Abstract

As Taiwan's economic development slows down, it is important to encourage people (especially those middle-aged or older, and women who are less likely to be employed) to start their own businesses and become an important part of the policy to solve the problem of unemployment. Though self-employed workers (including employers and own account workers) are more likely to be affected by market competition and business cycles than paid-employees, their demographic and working conditions are of little public concern. This study collected international/government statistics and analyzed a sample of self-employed persons in Taiwan. It compared the differences in proportion of international self-employment and changes in self-employment in Taiwan over the period 2005-2015. This study also compared demographic background and job characteristics of self-employed and employed. The results show that the proportion of self-employed persons in Taiwan in 2015 was 24.9%, which is higher than that of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries and equivalent to that of Italy and South Korea. The proportion of self-employed persons aged 65 and above was 83% in 2005. However, in the next 10 years, this proportion decreased slightly and partly transferred to the employment of private enterprises by 2015. With increase in age, the proportion of male and higher educated in the employers increased, and the number of self-employed persons was larger than that of employees. Taylor Pearson in the book "T             he End of Jobs" has predicted that in future, the formal work in the organizations may reduce, ‘the workers must create their own options’ situations will increase, and the development of entrepreneurial spirit will become an important challenge for workers. However, the risk of survival and the workplace stress is higher in self-employed than employed. There should be more policies concerning employment assistance and occupational health services for self-employed, so as not to sacrifice their social safety and health for economy.

Abstract

Entrepreneurial intention has been established to ignite and stimulate students’ willingness to engage into entrepreneurial behavior in future arising from certain variables. The main objective of this study is to understand how variables, namely attitude towards the behavior, desirability and feasibility of self-employment, family business background, entrepreneurship education and environment, affect entrepreneurial intentions of students in Malaysian higher education institutions. The primary data of this study was collected from education institutions located in the northern states of Malaysia, by way of distributing 200 survey questionnaires to respondents in University Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), University Sains Malaysia (USM), University Utara Malaysia (UUM) and University Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). The responses obtained were analyzed by means of various statistical and analytical tools, frequency distribution, mean, standard deviation analysis, Cronbach’s Alpha Realiability test, Person’s Correlation Coefficient and Linear Regression Analysis, computed by using the Package for the Social Science (SPSS) software version 17.0. The study outcome concludes that factors such as attitude towards the behavior, desirability and feasibility of self-employment, family business background and entrepreneurship education do have significant relationships towards students’ entrepreneurial intentions, but not the environmental factor. This research enhances higher institutions’ understanding of the subject study and stimulates policy makers in developing appropriate curriculum  in future development of entrepreneurial programs for students in higher education institutions.
